We’ve all heard them a million times. They are the cries of a person who feels like they are talking to a brick wall. “Why won’t you let me finish what I’m saying?” and “You’re not listening to me!”.
If you hear something like this coming from your spouse, it’s time to stop what you’re doing and begin paying attention. Your relationship depends on it.
The benefits of active listening are profound. Here are some of the things you can gain from giving your partner your undivided attention:
- Resolve conflicts quicker and more effectively
- Gain knowledge about your partner and insight into their thinking
- Solve problems before they get out of control
- Reduce the amount of tension in your home
- Strengthen your marriage/relationship
The absolute most important thing that you can do for yourself and your spouse is to appreciate and acknowledge them. This is done by listening to what they are saying. We may not always agree with our partner/spouse, but by respectfully listening you show them that you care about what they have to say.
Respectful communication is the foundation for any healthy relationship.
